Inspect your securement equipment before and after every use. If anything is damaged or worn do not use it and get it replaced as soon as possible.

Proper Storage of Equipment

Dunnage

  • Dunnage stored on the braces of the trailer landing gear should be secured with a 2-inch ratchet strap. Using anything less is considered improper securement and can lead to roadside violations.
  • Dunnage stored on the side braces of the trailer should be secured with a 4-inch strap from one of the winches on the trailer. This strap should go from the winch, back behind the lumber, then be hooked to the frame rail of the trailer.

Tarps

  • Secure with 1-inch ratchet straps when secured to the headache rack.
  • Secure with 4-inch strap if left on trailer deck out of the flow of air around the truck during travel.

BUNGEE CORDS DO NOT COUNT AS A SECUREMENT DEVICE!

Any equipment secured with only bungee cords is improperly secured equipment and opens the driver up to roadside violations. This includes hanging bundles of bungee cords from a single bungee on the headache rack, truck, or trailer. It also includes edge protectors, tarps, and friction mats.

Alternative Securement for hanging bungees and other equipment

  • Rope – 1/4 -inch poly propylene or braided nylon.
  • 1-inch ratchet straps.
  • Roll bundles of bungees in the last 6 feet of a tarp and secure them.
