Points to Remember
- If under 10,000 lbs. FMCSA requires a minimum of 2 chains and 2 binders per machine
- If over 10,000 lbs. FMCSA requires a minimum of 4 chains and binders per machine ( one on each corner )
- The illustration below is an example of how to use 1 chain as 2, they have to be hooked so that they work independently of each other.
- Chains on the front of the machine must pull in an opposite direction from the chains on the back of the machine
- Hydraulic lift or buckets must always be lowered to the trailer and a strap must be utilized to secure
- The 2nd illustration below shows where either a timber or friction mat should be placed under the knuckle to prevent damage to the aluminum trailer deck.
- Many machines have attachment points for chain built into their frames.
- Used machinery should have all loose dirt and debris cleaned off of them before loading.
- Take care of the paint. Painted surfaces on new equipment must be protected. Do not drag straps or chains across surfaces. Do not let your tie-downs touch painted surfaces.
- Never place straps or chains over the following:
- Hydraulic cylinders
- Control levers
- Thin plastic or metal parts that can crack or break
- Glass
- Electrical boxes or control modules
Example of using 1 chain as two independent securements

Here is an example of securing a Telehandler Cat. THO842, this machine measures 8′ 2″ from the roof to the ground so it can be loaded on a standard flatbed trailer. These are being picked up out of the Clayton, NC location.
