Decked Trailers

  1. Landing gear of all trailers should be raised all the way up before stacking. This will keep load height under legal limits (13 feet 6 inches).
  2. Straps should be placed over the load. Two straps should be placed within the first five feet of the trailer then one additional strap every 8 feet back.

    Points to Remember:

    • If the landing gear is not raised all the way up on the stacked trailers the load will be over legal height.
    • Inspect the brake chambers on each stacked unit to be sure that the brakes have not been caged. A caged brake chamber will have a bolt coming out of the center hole. Caged brakes will allow the trailer to roll.
    • Airbags and tires can lose pressure during transit causing the straps to loosen. Load checks will guard against this.
    • Straps on the stacked trailers do not have to pass under the rub rails.
Figure 1: Properlly secured 48ft. decked trailers. 2 straps (orange) in the first 5ft, then an additional strap every 8ft. back for a total of 7 straps over the load. 53 ft trailers will require an additional strap. Notice the middle trailer slopes backwards because of the raised landing gear.
